Lewis & Clark were given a $2,500 grant from President Jefferson to explore the uncharted West. Instead of groping their way across the unknown terrain and risking life and limb traveling through hostile Indian territory, Lewis and Clark solicited the help of a young Shoshone woman named Sacagawea. Without her help, their party of 33 would probably have never made it from St. Louis, through the Rocky Mountains, across Oregon territory and to the Pacific Ocean. Sacagawea remembered the Shoshone trails from her childhood that took them through seemingly impassable areas. She was an interpreter for her party, and negotiated with the Shoshone and Hidatsa Indians that the group meant no harm. What "War Party" would travel with a woman and her child? With Sacagawea's help, Lewis and Clark completed their journey and reached their intended destination. Without her, who knows how the history books would read today? At CDG, we're like Sacagawea.
