Sales-based awards honor fast-growing,
privately owned companies
Published 10-27-1999

Cadence McShane Corp., a
general contractor, won the top spot Tuesday in the annual Dallas
100 Awards, which recognize small and medium-size companies in the
North Texas area.
The awards honor fast-growing, privately
owned companies. About 200 companies entered this year's
competition.
Cadence McShane is a Dallas-based construction
contractor and manager for office buildings, distribution centers,
hotels, schools and other types of projects. Revenue in 1998 was
roughly $79 million, up from about $1.6 million in 1996, said
president Neal Harper.
Cadence McShane is owned by James
McShane, who lives in Chicago and owns another general contracting
company that does work principally in the Midwest. Cadence McShane
works exclusively in Texas, with offices in Dallas, Houston and
Austin.
Mr. McShane formed Cadence McShane in 1995 by
purchasing the assets of Cadence Group, a general contracting
company in Dallas.
One key to the company's recent growth
has been expansion into the Houston and Austin areas, Mr. Harper
said. "We'd toyed with those markets before but didn't really take
advantage of it."
Cadence McShane also has strong "repeat
business" with developers such as Trammell Crow Co. and Hillwood
Development Corp., he said.
The Dallas 100 awards are based
on sales growth from 1996 through 1998. To help assure that smaller
businesses are not put at a disadvantage in the contest, both
percentage growth and absolute dollar growth are considered.
Entrants must have had 1996 sales of at least $500,000 and
no more than $30 million.
The awards are presented by
Southern Methodist University's Cox School of Business Caruth
Institute and the CEO Institute. Winners were announced Tuesday
evening at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center.
