A big honor goes to a small private company

WorkPlace USA tops Dallas 100 list of area's fastest-growing firms

11/08/2001

By VICTOR GODINEZ / The Dallas Morning News

A commercial real estate services firm was recognized Wednesday as the fastest-growing small private company in Dallas-Fort Worth at the annual Dallas 100 Awards.

WorkPlaceUSA Inc. of Dallas took the top spot in the rankings – based on sales growth from 1998 to 2000 – thanks to a blistering performance last year.

Rounding out the top five were Dallas companies NT Logistics Inc., Lazo Technologies Ltd., NetworkIP and The McCarthy Cos.

WorkPlaceUSA posted sales of $24.1 million in 1998, slipped to $22.2 million in 1999, and shot to $618 million in 2000.

John Amend, WorkPlaceUSA founder, president and chief executive officer, said the 13-year-old company handles commercial relocation and new-office needs that include helping companies scout locations, draft building designs, hire construction contractors and integrate technology into new buildings.

Mr. Amend said 85 percent of the company's revenue came from repeat business and referrals.

"In our industry, that is absolutely enormous and it says something," he said.

"What it says is that once we acquire a customer, particularly one that has repetitive, multiple needs around the country, they like us."

Much of WorkPlaceUSA's sales growth came from its one-stop-shop philosophy that saved corporate clients from having to contract with different architects, builders and high-tech outsourcing firms, Mr. Amend said.

"It was really an afterthought," he said.

"We were after 'Do it faster. Do it cheaper.' And at the end of the day, we ended up making more money."

Many of WorkPlaceUSA's clients were in the telecom and high-tech fields, which have scaled back this year.

That forced the company to find new customers in areas such as health care and energy.

While sales growth in 2001 may not match last year's bumper crop, the dedication of the company's 300 employees will keep the firm riding high, Mr. Amend said.

The awards are presented by Southern Methodist University's Cox School of Business Caruth Institute and the CEO Institute.

All businesses applying for the list must have had 1998 sales of at least $500,000 and no more than $50 million.

To ensure that smaller businesses are not put at a disadvantage, both percentage growth and dollar growth are considered.
