Car seller tops Dallas 100

A used-car company - and hey, the company's president has heard the jokes about his trade - won the top spot Wednesday in the annual Dallas 100 Awards.
The awards honor privately owned companies that have grown especially quickly. Coming in first was R K Investments Inc., whose owner and president is Roan Kubas. Both he and his company are relatively youthful. R K Investments got its start in 1997. Mr. Kubas, at 34, is too young to qualify as a genuine baby boomer.
R K Investments' principal business is wholesaling used automobiles to other wholesalers and to retail dealers around the nation. About 10 percent of R K's business is selling used cars to the public at its Farmers Branch warehouse, where it also handles leases and financing for individuals buying used cars and new cars.
The company is on pace to gross close to $40 million this year, Mr. Kubas said. He sees used cars as a simple commodities business. "It's a market, and it changes daily," he said. "Take a Mustang convertible. Going into November it may not be as marketable as it is in the spring. ... And just imagine Explorers. If you have 100 of them, what would you do with them?"
He got his start at the predictable place - a retail dealer's lot, moving iron. He worked for some of the established names in Dallas: W.O. Bankston, Don Snell and others. After shifting to the wholesale side working for others, he started R K in October 1997. To accommodate growth, Mr. Kubas also has bought property in Denton for a new operations site, warehouse and retail facility.
Mr. Kubas gets his merchandise wherever he can find a good deal. "I'll buy from dealers, individuals, corporations, everywhere. I'll drive down the road and see a 'For Sale' sign on a car and buy it. ... If I can flip it and make five dollars, I'll do it. That's the key. You never go broke making a profit."
The Dallas 100 Awards are based on sales growth from 1997 through 1999. To help make sure that smaller businesses are not put at a disadvantage, both percentage growth and dollar growth are considered in the contest.
All businesses entering the contest must have had 1997 sales of at least $500,000 and no more than $50 million. The awards are presented by Southern Methodist University's Cox School of Business Caruth Institute and the CEO Institute. Winners were announced Wednesday evening at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. The complete list of winners and headquarters cities, in descending order:
