Assessment of analytical reasoning
As part of our hiring process we use
an assessment to assess analytical reasoning. We have found that
using this assessment helps us hire consultants who are more likely
to be successful for us and our clients. Our consultants typically
score in the highest percentiles of the assessment we use.
Questions?
You may be asking yourself some of these questions about using
testing as part of our hiring process:
We've attempted to answer these questions below.
Isn't testing a questionable
hiring practice?
No. The assessment we use is neither illegal nor unethical. All
selection tools, including experience requirements and interview
evaluations, are considered "tests" in a legal sense. Testing is
unavoidable since every conceivable hiring tool is a test.
Far from being questionable, testing provides valuable insight
about you and CDG to ensure that we both have as much information
as possible before making this critical career decision.
Aren't tests discriminatory?
Yes, but that does not necessarily mean they are unfair, illegal,
or unethical. All selection tools are designed to help employers
discern which people are likely to be good or poor performers. For
example, typing tests are designed to determine who is a fast and
accurate typist or a slow and inaccurate typist. Similarly, job
interviews are designed to determine which people have or lack the
skills to do the job. Legal and ethical issues are involved only
if the discrimination is unfair, especially if it is unfair to groups
relating to race, age, gender, or ethnicity.
Is the CDG assessment
of analytical reasoning unfairly discriminatory?
No. Research has shown that assessments of cognitive ability (for
example, reading, basic math, reasoning) predict a large component
of job success in practically every field. In consulting, where
problem solving is one of the key job elements, reasoning ability
is obviously important. CDG consultants are strong in problem solving,
and people who are not have typically found success difficult.
Although CDG consultants typically have certain characteristics,
they still are a diverse group of people. They reflect our commitment
to finding the best consultants, without regard to race, age, gender,
or ethnicity.
